Why uric acid matters

Gout happens when uric acid builds up and forms crystals in a joint. Keeping the level low, below 360 micromol per litre for most people, lets the crystals dissolve and stops new attacks.

Medicines do most of the work

Urate-lowering tablets are the most reliable way to reach the target. The dose is increased gradually with regular blood tests.

Lifestyle changes that help

  • Cut down on alcohol, especially beer and spirits
  • Limit sugary drinks and very large portions of red meat or shellfish
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Aim for a healthy weight, gradually
